Name: Wanda Maximoff Door: Left Canon: Marvel Comics Canon Point: post-Scarlet Witch (2023) #10 Age: There's no canon age given for Wanda (cries in comics), but I'm estimating that she is about 34 years old Appearance: Comic panel. Wanda stands at 5'7", weighs around 132 pounds, and has auburn hair and green eyes. History: Wanda at the Marvel wiki Personality: Positive Trait: COMPASSIONATE. Above all, Wanda is a deeply compassionate person, driven by her large and willing heart to try to make the world a better place for others. It's this that led her to disapprove of Magneto's often brutal methods and leave the Brotherhood of Mutants to join the Avengers in the first place, setting her sights on making a difference and helping people, and has driven her longstanding commitment to the Avengers over the years; she has helped the team fight countless battles, and has saved the world well more than once. Her compassion underlies her helping endeavors outside of her activities with the Avengers as well; in recent years, for instance, she has traveled the world to help solve magical crimes and made a dangerous trip, at much risk to her own life, to walk the Witches' Road to cure ills at the heart of magic, and currently has a shop set up in Lotkill, New York that contains a portal called The Last Door, which people can walk through when they need help and have nowhere else to turn. Such compassion, of course, doesn't just extend to people as an entity; Wanda deeply loves those close to her, and would do anything to protect them. She has risked life and limb for her twin brother, Pietro, countless times, as well as fought tirelessly to protect Vision, her former husband, and the home they had built together in New Jersey. Once, she told Vision that she believes that "Love is for souls, not bodies," showing the depths to which her love goes. She easily treats Billy Kaplan and Tommy Shepherd, who house the souls of her sons, as her own children, and has recently rushed to the aid of Viv Vision, the daughter of her ex-husband, considering her family as well; she also goes to great lengths to stand up for her friends, as evidenced, for instance, when she aided Carol Danvers and advocated for her in front of a magical court. There is nothing that Wanda won't do for others — and that's predominantly what drives her through life. Negative Trait: CHAOTIC EMOTIONS. There is a darker side to the compassion and love that Wanda feels so intensely — and it's that she feels everything intensely. Wanda's emotional world is both intense and downright chaotic, with those powerfully swirling emotions often taking control of her, rather than her having an ability to control them. She is often prone to being overwhelmed and consumed by negative emotions like anger and fear, and in a life marked by early and repetitive trauma, starting with the deaths of her uncle and aunt, Django and Marya, when she was a child, she has not had much opportunity to learn the skills required to regulate those emotions. On a milder, so to speak, end of the spectrum, this manifests in Wanda, for instance, being quick to explode into a temper with very little provocation; this is readily seen during arguments with her brother, which, on multiple canonical instances, have turned nasty quickly in large part due to Wanda's inability to keep her own anger under wraps. When combined with the fact that her powers are largely tied to her emotional states, a tendency to be overwhelmed by her own chaotic, particularly negative, emotions can have destructive consequences. In a moment of intense anger, for example, she accidentally set fire to her village as a child, which led to her and Pietro being ostracized. In her grief after the souls of her children that she created with magic were reabsorbed by Mephisto, she broke down, and struck out against the Avengers, until Agatha Harkness cast a spell to make her forget her children; when that spell later broke and she remembered these events, she blamed the Avengers and broke down in the Avengers Disassembled arc, lashing out and leading to the deaths of multiple allies. In turn, this set the stage for the events of House of M and the famous "No more mutants" — a move made by Wanda out of anger at Magneto, who she perceived as prioritizing mutants over his own children. Negative Trait: GUILT. Wanda's deep caring also has another dark side: a tendency to become stuck in, to ruminate on, and at times even drown in, her own guilt. While it can serve as a motivator to drive Wanda to do and be better, her preoccupation on her guilt is often to her detriment, and is a barrier to her own happiness. After the events of Avengers Disassembled and House of M, and the resulting fallout, Wanda became deeply stuck in her guilt from her actions, which, in turn, made her stuck in life; though she, for example, engaged in an effort to cure a "sickness" at the core of magic, she avoided facing those she had hurt head on, and long found it difficult to find a way to move forward. Her guilt at the destruction she had caused for mutants, too, kept her withdrawn from and at odds with their community — until she underwent great personal risk to enhance the resurrection protocols for the mutant nation of Krakoa. Furthermore, this overarching guilt drives Wanda to feel a constant need to continue to atone for her actions in the past. Her compassion and natural desire to help others would drive her actions regardless, but is this guilt, underlying her need for atonement, that makes her pursuit of this tireless, to the point that she takes no time for herself or her own needs. In current canon, she stretches herself thin, between serving as an Avenger and always being on call to help anyone who comes through "The Last Door" at her shop in Lotkill — and none of it, so far, has felt enough. Arguably, it never will. Negative Trait: STUBBORN. While determination and perseverance have played no small part in Wanda's ability to endure adversity and continue to work to do better, this, too, has a dark side, in the form of a stubborn streak that is often antithetical to her own well-being. When Wanda sets her sights on something, she digs her heels in — and she digs them in hard. For instance, one of the reasons that arguments with her brother have a tendency to grow nasty is that she is stubborn and unyielding in clinging to her own viewpoint, refusing to compromise or see one single aspect of another side. She continues to pursue a task or a goal, even when doing so is physically harmful to her. For example, in an ongoing struggle against the Emerald Warlock during the events of the Scarlet Witch (2015) run, Wanda continues to use her magic even though each time she does so, it ages her and comes closer to killing her. Despite being warned of the dangers of possessing the Elder God Chthon after binding the Darkhold to her body and soul, Wanda goes through with it — and continues to keep him imprisoned in her soul, insisting that she has everything under control. (Spoilers: she doesn't. Not entirely, at least. But, all the same, in her current canon, Wanda continues to hold on.) Powers and Abilities: Wanda's main powerset falls under the purview of something called chaos magic. This is a dark magic that originates from the Elder God Chthon, who gave Wanda, an already-powerful human of magical birthright, a "blessing" (read: curse) at birth to use that power as her own. Users of chaos magic are incredibly rare, and those who can wield it are capable of manipulating and warping reality on a whim, controlling a variety of different mystical energies, and even potentially bringing about the destruction of the universe. Any reality-warping, time manipulation, teleporting, and potentially universe-destroying abilities will be nerfed in Duplicity — and will be completely unavailable to Wanda. Still, even without this, she'll have quite a few abilities that remain! These include: - Simple witchcraft, including the ability to cast spells and hexes. Wanda's hexes generally involve the ability of probability manipulation, which will only be available to her within the power cap of the game. - Biological manipulation, to a limited extent that would allow her to heal minor injuries on both herself and others (but would not be able to stop the effects of fatal wounds). - Clairvoyance (or magical intuition) and telepathy (an ability to read minds), which allow her to receive information about objects and other people, as well as to get a read on their thoughts/emotions, at least to some extent. She has, in the past, demonstrated an ability to alter people's minds and induce fear in them, but she does not favor doing this. For the most part, Wanda would largely only be able to get impressions and vague thoughts/feelings, rather than knowing very explicit details, but this is still included in a permissions post. - The ability to use her magic to make energy constructs (items, very basic weapons) that last for a short period of time. - Limited energy manipulation, including energy absorption and energy projection. - The generation and casting of illusions, within the power cap of the game. - Magical awareness, which allows Wanda to sense what is going on around her and what other powers people might have, within the limitations of the power cap of the game/what could be fun for plot purposes. This is also included in a permissions post. - The ability to channel energy from divine sources, with permission from any players of potential god-entity characters in the game. - Flight, to a limited height and distance. - Necromancy — which Wanda has only ever really used to make contact with the deceased, so she wouldn't go beyond that here, either. - Object purification - Telekinesis, which allows her to move objects without touching them. - Conjuring and transmutation, within the power cap of the game. The Darkhold, also known as the "book of the damned," which Wanda has bound to her body and soul, contains a trove of occult knowledge and black magic spells. These include: - Knowledge of the origins of vampirism and lycanthropy (at least as it applies to the Marvel universe) - Siphoning psionic energy to empower a target - An incantation to cure warts, oddly enough - An incantation that causes a blindingly bright burst that would cause the scrolls of Chthon, the physical copy of the Darkhold, to vanish - The ability to control the will of others - The Montesi Formula, an incantation that can destroy all vampires - The ability to access Limbo - The ability to conjure Darkforce, a negative energy originating from dark matter that allows a user to sense other people's presences as well as their fear, and to establish psychic links - The ability to summon Chthon and other elder gods Though the Darkhold will be accompanying Wanda to Duplicity, she will not be able to use it to summon Chthon or any other elder gods, will not be able to access Limbo, and will not be able to use the Montesi Formula. Some other proposed nerfs would include: the Darkhold only affording Wanda an awareness of vampiric characters in the game (this is also included on the powers permissions post), and the will control spell limited in its capacity. I am also okay with the will control spell being completely nerfed, as Wanda wouldn't favor using it regardless outside of extreme circumstances. It should be noted that there is a known weakness in Wanda's abilities: they can be negated by a metal called mysterium, which has anti-magic properties. Aside from her pure raw power, Wanda has been a long-term student of magic, and is thus in possession of a large amount of knowledge regarding both magic and the occult. Additionally, during her time with the Avengers, she received training in hand-to-hand combat — and when the occasion has called for it, has been known to throw a mean right hook. Wanda is also fluent in several languages, including English, French, and German, and has been shown to have at least conversational knowledge of Greek and Russian, among others. She is also a skilled dancer, regularly engages in yoga and meditation, and is a knowledgeable equestrian. Inventory: - (1) Avengers identification card - (1) crystal ball - The Darkhold. Also known as the "book of the damned", this is now bound to Wanda's body and soul Samples: TDM top level; TDM with Jeanne-Marie |
